Lusatia Detective Agency, on the Edge of the Sorbian Region

Dresden is no less the gateway to Eastern Europe than it is the most important city on the edge of Upper Lusatia, a region historically settled by the Sorbs. Just a few kilometres’ drive from the state capital, one already encounters signs of the successful blending, integration and peaceful coexistence of two different cultures: the German – or more precisely Saxon – culture and that of the West Slavic recognised minority of the Sorbian people. Nowhere else in Germany south of the Saterland can bilingual town signs be found, let alone with the translation displayed in equally sized lettering.

 

The Sorbs look back on a turbulent history and a relationship with Germans that has not always been easy, yet today coexistence functions almost seamlessly according to the experience of our Dresden detectives (after all, minor disputes exist everywhere). With a share of approximately 12 per cent of the population of Upper Lusatia, the Sorbs are definitively a significant minority. Their language and culture have increasingly become an attraction for numerous interested visitors in recent years, who, for example, observe with fascination the traditional Easter riding, which takes place in all larger towns of the settlement area as well as in many villages such as the beautiful village of Ostro.
